It's a long time since I've had the opportunity to write. But today as I was eating lunch I heard the song, "Isn't She Lovely," by Stevie Wonder. When I think of the word, lovely it usually is in the context of something or someone that I am looking at. But Stevie Wonder was blind as so many of us know. That got me thinking.

I remembered that the song was in response to his daughter's birth. YES! YES! YES! I get it! He was not talking about his baby's beautiful features (although I'm sure they were). Nor was he talking about the faces she made. He could see neither. No, he was talking about her essence.

This baby was lovely apart from any physical aspect. Who she was made her lovely!

The same is true of each of us. Although the world is focused on our physical appearance as women, each of our souls is lovely. Doesn't the Word of God say as much?

"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead , it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit."

I Peter 3:3-4

Take a deep breath with me before I continue. If you are anything like me, you've read this scripture before and thought many things! Most were things that seemed impossible. For me, I originally thought as a teen that I absolutely could not doll myself up because it was all about my insides! Later, as I aged, got married, and started having children, I interpreted this scripture to mean I needed to stay quiet and that my example of Christ would win others over. Both of those beliefs were erroneous and the 2nd one only strengthened my resolve to win over my husband and his family with my quiet and gentle spirit. Well, we all know how that turned out, more abuse!

So what does it mean? How are Peter's words relevant to loveliness? Well, I believe that he is talking about the essence of a woman. A beautiful woman of God is one whose heart is at rest. She trusts Her Redeemer, is fully reliant on His provision, and as a result, the essence of this woman's beauty is seen and felt by all.

Loveliness is not only something that is seen by the eye. It is something that is felt, heart to heart. You are lovely in God's eyes. Rest in Him and that resting heart of loveliness will be evident to others.
